This is a fantastic novella that sets up a beautiful story of an unlikely relationship! Bristol and Marlon, aka Grip, meet in their early twenties when Bristol spends part of her Spring Break in LA, trying to reconnect with her estranged brother Rhyson. Even though they are from completely different backgrounds, the two hit it off immediately and find a connection with one another that is easygoing and real…something neither of them has felt before. FLOW sets up the story so perfectly on what’s to come in GRIP. We have a dual POV from Grip and Bristol, which is great. I love hearing what each love interest is thinking as they try to navigate through this new relationship and what it means to each of them. Spring break ends on a sour note and Bristol heads back to New York. Do the two keep in touch after she leaves and what is to become of their romance?! This is a must read before diving into GRIP. It’s #FREE, there is no reason not to one click!

Kennedy Ryan was a new-to-me author, and with this series she has carved a special spot in my bookshelves. I finished this series in 4 days- and although I wasn't planning on reading them back-to-back, I could not have stopped even if I wanted to- which I didn't. Not even close.

For lack of a better word, I am floored by this series. Overwhelmed. Emotional. Unable to move on. Although I read a lot- and have some favorite books where I LOVE the characters- this was on a different level. Grip and Bristol. Just.. we should all be lucky to have a love like Grip and Bristol.

This is why I waited to write a review. Even two days later I am still incoherent. Sigh.

So here are just SOME of the things I loved about this series. The writing was flawless. It was just so well written and just so SMARTLY written. This author made us a part of the story. And side note. HIS LYRICS. HOLY CRAP. I just bow down to this author who not only wrote a beautiful book, a beautiful series, but she's also a poet. And that's not the same kind of skill. Bruise is the kind of song that should be real. And his vows. And Still. And his words at THAT moment. And there are just numerous other times where Grip's words play integral parts to the story. And they were so so well written.

And her characters were really well developed. They were not stereotypical. They were not shallow. They were just so very real. Their reactions made sense because they were exactly what people would do in real life. Their thoughts made sense. In a lot of romances the "villain of the story" is another person. This is not a knock on them because who doesn't like to see our hero or heroine rise above "the other person" and be victorious. But it makes the story about someone else in part. But that's not the point of this story- this story is all Grip and Bristol. Always. And I love that so much.

But what I loved the MOST about this book, so much so it deserves its own mention, is the weaving of social commentary throughout the story. Simply put, this book makes you think. In the best of ways. We are all flawed. We all have biases. We are all naive to others struggles. (And Iz statement on being naive to something not being the problem- its what you do after- this is one of my favorite quotes). It takes a special kind of someone to be able to write a story, that not only shows everyones flaws, but does so in a way that does not put us on the defensive (oh I would NEVER do that. I would NEVER think that) or make us judge from a moral high horse. It simply makes you think and RELATE. What does bias mean? What does finding commonality mean? Can you really step into someone else's shoes? How do these things play out in real life experiences.

Which takes me to our main characters. I don't think I've ever loved a couple so much. These two. Just from the start they stole my heart. And it was a surprise because I honestly didn't expect to love them (or this story) so much (what can I say- I'm ALWAYS skeptical of books that get a lot of buzz). And yet I do. SO much. SO much. Their love for each other- ALWAYS- is just magical. It's why I read romance. They are the definition of soulmates. Their souls are MADE for each other- regardless of their background, race or what anyone else thinks about them.

And because each book deserves it's own recognition here are just a few more incoherent thoughts on the individual books.

    FLOW

Flow was a free prequel. It showed how the two of them met- and gave a little background on where they came from. Bristol's story is more prevalent in this story. And I really felt for her. I will say if you've read some of Kennedy Ryan's other books you probably know her back story- but as this was my first book by her I had no idea what I was getting into. This book may be short- but it packed a punch. I was already invested by, like, page 3. I wanted to see these characters interact and get to know each other. And by the end of the book there was no way I wasn't going to immediately start Grip.

    GRIP

So this story picks up where Flow left off. And I have to say I loved it. I was hooked on their interactions, both professionally and personally. I was rooting for them to sort their issues. I felt for both of them. That is something I should mention too- the POV switching. So good. Seeing inside these characters heads. There is truly not a villain in this story. Because even those characters you love to hate- when you start thinking about their experiences and WHY they are acting the way they are- even if you don't love them- you can understand. And I should mention that is one of the most amazing things about Kennedy Ryan's writing. She is such a SMART writer she is able to weave all these issues flawlessly into the story- and she's able to show everything to a point where you would think every single thing that happened was something she personally experienced- that WE personally experienced... because we kind of did. And while we know that isn't really true- you could believe it was because honestly it doesn't matter if she was writing from his (gender) view or her (gender) view- whether it was from his family's perspective or hers-it was all relatable.

This was just an epic love story. It is not a case where they resolve everything ASAP and then have a whole bunch of misunderstandings. No. Kennedy took her time and she stayed true to her characters and to her story. And we are lucky for it. Because it was such a beautiful story. So much so that if everything ended with Grip... I would have been happy. But I had no idea what I was getting myself into with Still.

    STILL

This book GUTTED me. There is no getting around it and no other way to put it. And I will stop here and say it is without a doubt my favorite book of the three. Even with how much it hurt. I was not expecting it. But the thing is, once again every situation her characters find themselves in- they are all things that happen in real life. Even now. And that they're happening to our Grip and Bristol (because at this point there's no way you aren't possessive over these two characters) it's just brutal. As I'm writing this two of my book buddies who were behind me in reading are both messaging me. Because they just got to THAT part. And I'm experiencing it all over again. And I have to say it just hurts. But it's also beautiful. That Kennedy can write so many emotions- that she can evoke so many emotions from us. And in the end, after we don't think we will ever breathe again, we can take a deep breath and just "dwell in the possibilities."

People ask often whats your favorite series is- and I have very diverse reading habits- but when I start listing mine (because who can really just pick one) there is no doubt this one will be high on my list. I think it is the type of book you are lucky to experience. That everyone should read it. Every word was beautiful. Every step was worth it. Even those difficult ones. This is the kind of book you don't get over. It stays with you. It makes you think. It hurts. But it also makes you smile. It's the kind of book where you wish your book buddies lived nearby so you could demand hugs (seriously guys please get on that- k thanks bye). And not have your husband sitting next to you on the couch looking at you like you're crazy (not even a little sorry). And that kind of book is rare and should be appreciated and enjoyed. So I am just so so happy. And so not ready to move on or let them go. So for now I'm just going to live vicariously through my book buddies. But I'll definitely be rereading them... and without a doubt going back to read her other books. I cannot wait to go back and read Kai and Rhyson's books.

"And when the years have passed,
and we have watched a thousand sunsets, and we are bent,
    our bodies crooked with age
    ask me again.
    In the twilight,
in the shadow of the life we have shared,
ask me if I love you,
and my heart will answer before my lips can part.
    My love, my life,
my heart never left your hands.
    Always,
    evermore,
    even after.
    Still."

Flow is the first thing I have ever read by Kennedy Ryan, and I knew right away that it wouldn’t be my last. Novellas are tricky for me to rate and review. Most of the time there never seems to be enough story for me to become totally invested in what I’m reading, and any connection I feel to the characters is flimsy at best. However, sometimes one comes a long and surprises me, and this was one of those times!

Grip agrees to pick up his best friend’s sister, Bristol, from the airport without having ever seen her before. As he is desperately searching for her, he sees one of the most beautiful women he has ever laid eyes on. When he finally receives a text with Bristol’s picture, he can’t believe his luck! The girl staring up at him from his phone is the gorgeous woman standing right in front of him.

From the moment Bristol and Grip meet, you can see they have chemistry. Their attraction is magnetic, and their connection is undeniable. Rhyson, Brystol’s brother, winds up needing to work later than he anticipated, so Grip stays with Bristol to keep her company. During this time, they talk about everything under the sun, even topics that could be uncomfortable to talk about with someone you just met, but with them it isn’t like that.

Bristol is visiting her twin brother for the first time in years. When Rhyson, a musical prodigy, emancipated himself from his overbearing parents, he left behind his sister seemingly without a second thought. Bristol is using this visit to try to reconnect with her brother, but from the time she steps off the plane, he seems to be too preoccupied with work to spend any time with her. Grip is more than happy to take his place, and as much as Rhyson’s absence hurts Bristol, she enjoys her time with Grip immensely. When it comes time for her to leave, they have to decide whether they are going to continue what they started or let it die a natural death. Bristol thinks she knows the answer to that dilemna until something unexpected happens that changes everything.

This prequel is a fantastic introduction to the characters of Bristol and Grip. It sets up their story perfectly giving us the backstory that will allow us to understand the depth of their feelings for one another in Grip. Having read Grip before I wrote this review, I can tell you that this is novella is absolutely essential to their overall story. It can’t be skipped the way so many prequels can. You will be doing yourself a great disservice by trying to skip this one.

Kennedy Ryan has an incredible writing style that makes this story a pleasure to read due to that alone. Her ability to evoke so much emotion in such a short time is nothing short of remarkable. I loved Grip right from the start. His charming personality, intelligence, and sense of humor make him easy to love. Bristol comes off as sheltered, hypocritical, and narrow minded at first, and I hated that. I am going to be real here and say it was because it just seemed like a stereotype…the rich little white girl that says ignorant sh!t without a clue as to how offensive it is or stupid and close minded she sounds. What I appreciated was the conversations Grip and Bristol had later on in the book and during the next one. It is what made me love the books. These characters don’t pretend that they don’t have different life experiences, but they try their best to understand each other. That is a beautiful thing! All in all, I enjoyed Flow and would recommend it to any romance fan!

Bristol and Grip come from two different worlds. Bristol is white and grew up in a privileged and dysfunctional family. Grip is black and grew up in a heavily gang-infested area in California with tight family ties. Bristol meets Grip, her brother’s best friend, while visiting him during a break from college. While they couldn't seem more opposite, the two couldn't be more similar in so many ways. Grip is a super talented musician who is trying to make it in the music business. Bristol plans on pursuing music management after graduation. Their physical and emotional chemistry is off the charts, and they decide to see if they can make a long distance relationship work. An unfortunate misunderstanding causes the two music lovers not to speak until they see each other eight years after they met.

OMG, where did this book come from? I loved every heartfelt moment - even the ones that gave me anxiety. I found myself messaging a friend late night who was reading Grip at the same time. Both books, Flow (#0.5 prologue ) and Grip (Grip #1) are packed with a ton of poetic, emotional intensity. I have some serious love for Grip and Bristol. Both characters were strong and smart. They didn't see black or white; they saw love. When she finally got a grip on her feelings her love flowed. Don't wait to read this their story. Epic. I can't wait to read other books by Kennedy. Wow!!!

You do not have to have any affinity for hip hop or rap music to appreciate this beautiful love story. I have to tell you that I’m no stranger to hip hop and have been a fan of this genre since the 80’s. I just saw DJ Kool & Rakim perform a few weeks ago. I have a whole new appreciation for this music after reading this gripping series.

This was my first book you Kennedy Ryan and I shamefully have to admit I had this since it was released. Oh man, was I stupid to wait this long! I can't even put into words how beautiful this book is and it is just the prequel!

Kennedy Ryan’s writing is is flawless and flowing and just takes you along the ride so easily even with the complicated issues discussed and the very different characters.
I love the different characters and their social backgrounds. The pretty heavy subjects they talk about, yet the easy way they talk about, with no judgment - just a discussion on eye level.
And knowing it's coming from an African-American author makes it even more authentic. With topics like that you know when an author doesn't have the experience and 'fakes' it.
But this is just so real.
All those 5 stars reviews you see are absolutely legit and some have better words to describe it.

I totally fell in love with Grip. All of him. Bristol is sweet and I do understand where she's coming from with her anger and her wish to get to know her twin brother again.

The end of Flow and those first words in Grip?!?!?!? 😲😲😲😲😲😲💔💔💔💔💔

4.5stars! Flow is the prequel to Grip and is a must read first! Bristol & Rhyson are twins and have gone through so much! Then there is Marlon/Grip as he is known and is best friends with Rhyson! Grip has been asked to pick Bristol up at the airport and these two have insta connection from the start! They have a week talking & getting to know one another and a few sneaky magical kisses too! Then when Bristol is leaving to go home something happens, will this be the end or something more???? I can see this series is going to be awesome with lots of emotion so with that said I am jumping into Grip!!
