Behind the Bars (Music Street Series) Kindle Edition
I was the awkward musician, and she was the high school queen.
The only things we had in common were our music and our loneliness.
Something in her eyes told me her smile wasn’t always the truth.
Something in her voice gave me a hope I always wished to find.
And in a flash, she was gone.
Years later, she was standing in front of me on a street in New Orleans.
She was different, but so was I. Life made us colder. Harder. Isolated.
Caged.
Even though we were different, the broken pieces of me recognized the sadness in her.
Now she was back, and I wouldn’t make the mistake of letting her go again.
When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.
When we met again, I became her darkest storm.

Brittainy Cherry has been in love with words since the day she took her first breath. She graduated from Carroll University with a Bachelors Degree in Theatre Arts and a minor in Creative Writing. 5+ “You’re the music” stars!! Hands down my favourite Brittainy Cherry book to date!!! Ms. Cherry really pulled out the big guns with this story - part one was absolutely gut wrenching to read - I had to stop listening to my audiobook at one point as it was too much for my heart to take...but then I put my big girl pants on and soldiered on because I knew that the HEA would be worth all the heartache.
I fell in love with Jasmine and Elliott - I loved that it was them against the rest of the world for the most part. I loved the relationships they had with their family and friends. I enjoyed watching their relationship flourish and grow as teenagers, and then rekindle as adults.
I cried, I swooned and I laughed throughout this story. You will need tissues but the ride that Ms. Cherry takes us on was well worth the years!!
- Reviewed in Australia on 7 December 2017There is something about a Brittainy C. Cherry book that just draws you in. I’m sure it is due to the richness of her characters and the powerful storylines. This novel is full of that. The journey that you will be lead on is full of angst and heartache. It is a touching tale of friendships, family bonds, passion and sorrow.
It is told in dual POV by Elliott and Jasmine. Their story starts in high school where they form an unlikely alliance with a promise of more. Circumstances change the course of direction for them, and it is six years before they connect again. They have both changed, and maybe not for the better. Until they each find their truths, they can not fully reach their HEA.
Even though I enjoyed this read, I can’t say it’s my favourite. For me, it was too angsty, and that might surprise some, as I like my angsty books. Whether it was my mood or circumstances I’m not sure but it didn’t quite feel like a winner for me. It didn’t flow collectedly as I am used to from this author. I like a little more humor to lighten it up and not be fully sad. I also love romance in my reading choices, but this one seemed excessive and slightly over the top and unauthentic. I may be in the minority with these thoughts and it won’t by any means stop me from reading more works from Ms Cherry.

That is all I can say about this book. Buy it and read it, that is all!
Ok, so you want more?
Behind the Bars is a beautiful, heartbreaking yet hopeful YA to NA second chance romance. Now, I am not one to read much YA/NA as I am an old fart and they often feel way to young for me, however Ms Cherry is an exception to that rule. I love everything I have read of hers to date.
Jasmine and Elliott's story is not an easy one. It is dark and full of hurt a lot of the time, however through it all I was full of hope that they would be together.
I hated most of the characters most of the time - not our lovelies, but those around them. I had such visceral reactions to people and things that happen. I was shaking with anger, screaming at my kindle, yelling at the characters.
That, my friends, is one of my signs of a great story.
I loved that this story is set in New Orleans, as I have been there and can picture it as I am reading. I could hear the music, taste the beignets, smell the smells (yes, Bourbon St does have it's own special odour lol).
I was drawn right into this book, from the first word to the last I couldn't put the book down.
I would love to see more of these characters in the future. Please make that happen Ms Cherry.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can’t say enough good things about this book
Verified PurchaseBrittainy C. Cherry is a wordsmith. She is one of those people that is doing exactly what she was made for. Behind the Bars is another masterpiece. I can’t say enough good things about this book! It moved me and gave me the feels on an entirely different level! It was brilliant and a top favorite of mine this year!
Jasmine Greene is the daughter of a traveling musician and a mom-ager. Her dad, Ray, is fantastic, but her mom is always trying to get her to be someone she’s not. Jasmine loves music and soul is what speaks to her. According to her mother, Jasmine needs to sing pop to be successful. For the first time in a long time, Jasmine has a home. New Orleans becomes home for them, as Ray has a long-term gig. While in New Orleans, she meets Elliot.
Elliot is a sweet, shy, and quiet boy. He’s one of those too skinny and a bit nerdy high schoolers. But when Jasmine hears him play his saxophone, he becomes someone else. His music is everything. Jasmine and Elliot forge an unlikely friendship that becomes more with time. Elliot holds the key to Jasmine’s heart and nothing could ever break them apart. Until Jasmine’s mother decides to uproot her entire life. While Jasmine is gone, the unthinkable happens to Elliot and they go years without seeing each other or speaking.
Finally, Jasmine comes home. Home to New Orleans, to Ray, and maybe even to that shy boy she’s been in love with since she was a teen.
Elliot and Jasmine are both so different as adults. I won’t get into their second chance love story, but gah! It’s stunning. I felt their pain, their struggle, and their love completely. I adore these characters so much. Elliot is one of the best characters Brittainy has ever written. He’s so complex. And, as always, there are a few side characters that completely steal the show. TJ is incredible, and Ray. Oh Ray. I can’t even tell you how much I loved this man!!! (view spoiler)
Elliot and Jasmine’s love was strong. Strong enough to withstand the strongest of storms. Strong enough to fight the hardest of battles. And strong enough to conquer all the hardships they face along the way. It’s not without a fight, but these two are made to be. Their connection is that strong. You can feel it- it’s palpable.
36 highlights. 36. I’m a reader who usually highlights a few of my favorite quotes while I’m reading, maybe 5-10, 15 if I really loved the book. But 36… that only happens with a Cherry book. There are so many quotes that spoke to my heart. So many moments filled with pain, hope, and love, that I needed to save on my kindle so I could go back and re-read them when I needed them. This story and these words are so special to me.
“One can’t truly heal if they pretend the cracks don’t exist.”
Behind the Bars is one of those books that will touch your heart and soul. It will make you feel, make you cry, and by the end, completely warm your heart. THIS is the reason Brittainy is my favorite author. She always makes me cry, but by the end, always always leaves my heart happy and healed. Read this book for the love, for the heart, and for the music. It’s a book that needs to be read and I give it all the stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite by her
Verified Purchase“You don’t see music, you feel it. Music doesn’t see color. Music transcends all stereotypes. You’ll be the greatest soul singer known to mankind.” Elliot
“It was crazy how jazz fixed the broken pieces of me every time, how the sounds always took me back to a safe place in my soul.” Elliot
“In my family, whenever we go through good times or bad, we give each other a key. It stands for a reminder that you always have a place called home, no matter what.” Elliot
“She lost herself on the hospital floor and was unable to be fixed, because once a parent lost their child, they lost themselves. There was no way to be fix a broken heart that heat for a child. There was no way to console a person whose world had just been stolen away from them.” Elliot
I learned the hardest truth of life: you can’t force love to happen, no matter how hard you try. You can’t force someone to love you, to be proud of you, to care. The only thing you’re in control of is your own soul and discovering what makes your heart beat.” Jasmine

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreams....
Verified PurchaseWhat a beautiful book. I feel #InLove with each and every character. The related to much to Elliot because like him I had a very bad stutter for many years but over came it. I was bullied relentlessly and hated my life but decided to fight! My daughter stutters too but she is working through it. I didn't get to go to speech theoropy so did it by myself. I still struggle hear and then specially when I am flustered or stressed but I made it just like Elliott did. I cried ugly tears reading this book and I laughed so much that I almost wet my pants. I loved that there was a duel P.O.V as well. Loved that! I got to experience all of the emotion in each character. It was breath talking. The loss was heart breaking but the love made up for it. Strength of love is what it is all about. Thank you for this amazing story. It's the first book I have read by you but I will be hunting for more as soon as I am done with this review although it does the book no justice. It's kinda hard to put into words working from a phone. 🤔 wish I had my laptop near...

Elliot and Jasmine's story
A beautiful love story of dreams, sacrifice, heartache. loss and forgiveness. I had an instant connection with Jasmine and Elliot, they were such special characters. Both had been through so much in their pasts, both knew the cold feeling of loneliness. This story tore out my heart and soul, but Ms. Cherry pieced it back together again beautifully.
